Series of the week: “The Therapy” (review & stream)

German quality series still have a hard time with genres. Although “Dark” (Netflix) proved that Germany can also do sci-fi, the attempt to create fantasy in the style of “Stranger Things” with “Der Greif” (Amazon Prime) fell short of expectations . But hope dies last. After the nerve-wracking six-part miniseries “Liebes Kind” started on Netflix in September, Amazon Prime is following up with a series version of Sebastian Fitzek’s debut novel “The Therapy” and proves: Germany can also do psychological thrillers.

Like the book, the series turns out to be a disturbing Scandi-Noir-style game of confusion in which everything is not as it first seems. Two years after his daughter Josy (Helene Zengel from “System Sprenger”) disappeared, psychiatrist Viktor Larenz (Stephan Kampwirth, who also starred in “Dark”) tries to find peace in the solitude of a North Sea island – but is attacked by a mysterious woman (Emma Bading), who apparently knows something about Josy’s disappearance.
