Far too dangerous. Local residents of the Jacket Gendeweg-Huizenbeemdweg at Oss think. Every month there is a collision at the intersection. Last Sunday it went wrong again. And so the neighborhood wants the intersection to be tackled.

“It is due to the intersection itself,” says one of the local residents. “Many people doubt whether they have priority, and then it is who first pushes through.” In the past, the Gesteweg was a priority road, now the rule applies: on the right has priority.

“I think everyone thinks he’s priority,” adds another local resident. “Certainly if the corn is high, it is almost impossible to oversee.”

Traffic expert Arno Smits does not think it is the situation. “It is a normal intersection with clear traffic signs and a threshold to remove the speed. The problem is in humans. He takes the intersection wrong,” he says to DTV News.

According to Smits, the problem lies with the viewing behavior of drivers and driving too fast. “People often forget to scan. And even that is not always enough. You have to go through the process of observing, predicting, evaluating, deciding and acting several times when you approach a cross.”

The speed also plays a role. At 30 kilometers per hour the stop distance is 13 meters, at 80 kilometers that is 45 meters. “Then you can no longer prevent an accident, even if you have seen the other person.”

The municipality of Oss will turn the intersection into a roundabout this winter. Not only because of the many accidents, but also because flex homes and a new residential area are coming near. “I am happy to do something about it,” say local residents. “With a roundabout, the speed is at least removed.”

Smits sees the roundabout as a positive measure, but warns: “That is also not excluding accidents. It starts with looking good and braking on time.”

According to the municipality of Oss, temporary measures such as warning lights, speed cameras or extra traffic controls are not on the planning.
