In the South Korean Netflix saga “Squid Game”, the unscrupulous “VIP” characters are more or less closely based on the excesses in real contemporary history.
After the first season of the global Netflix success, their creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk found that one of these VIPs unintentionally resembled Donald Trump, the richest person who has ever become President of the United States.
After the conception of season three, he had a similar finding: “Elon Musk is everywhere nowadays, isn’t it?”, Hwang against the “Time Magazine” about the Tesla-Mogul and Trump’s most important campaign donor. “Everyone talks about him. He is not only the boss of a huge technology company that controls almost the whole world, but he is also a showman. After finishing season 3, of course I thought: ‘Oh, some of the VIPs are musk quite similar.’
Almost like a great invisible conspiracy
The last season of the serial drama started last Friday (June 27). There is a number of masked VIPs, very rich people who finance the game. They personally pursue the process and conclude bets on the fate of certain participants. The gamers remain anonymous, but seem to be “Westerners” who talk to each other in English instead of in Korean.
Hwang Dong-Hyuk added that the decision to demask some celebrities and to participate in the games themselves were due to the political climate in America. “In the past, those who really controlled the system and kept the power were almost like a great invisible conspiracy behind the curtain,” he said.
“But this is no longer the case, especially not in America. Nowadays one talks a lot about oligarchy. But these big tech entrepreneurs perform and say to everyone who they support with their money. The people who really control the power and the system no longer hide. They willingly take off their masks, almost as if they wanted to announce:” We are those who have the say. “
In another background discussion, the “Squid Game” creator said that the story would now be “chosen” with season three. However, he did not rule out the possibility that there could be a “prequel” (a predecessor narrative) in the future.
