Serie A is planning to organize a tournament for the clubs’ non-participating players during the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022. This is to be held in America and, in addition to brand awareness overseas, is primarily intended to give the professionals a chance to bridge the break. This was confirmed by the Italian head of the association, Luigi De Siervo, to the international news agency Reuters.
“We want to keep the players fit and at the same time assert ourselves in a market that we consider strategic,” said the 53-year-old (quoted via “ESPN”). All 20 first division teams would take part in the tournament with the professionals who are not staying with the 32 national teams in Qatar. The event is currently planned in Orlando, starting about a week after the opening game of the World Cup on November 21st.
“The games are scheduled in such a way that there is no overlap with the World Cup calendar,” emphasized De Siervo. The talks are not yet very advanced, but potentially interested sponsors and media partners have already agreed.
