Sergio Ramos sets Champions League goalscoring record for defenders

Draw between PSV and Arsenal

Sevilla FC was eliminated from the European Cup as bottom of the Champions League Group B. The Andalusians would have had to win at RC Lens on Tuesday evening in order to at least reach their own favorite competition – the Europa League. However, the LaLiga club lost 2-1 in northern France. After all, Sergio Ramos achieved a sole “premier class” record. After his equalizer (79th) from the penalty spot, the 37-year-old is now the defender with the most goals in Europe’s most important club competition.

Ramos has 17 goals in 142 games, and with his goal against Lens he left Roberto Carlos (16 in 120 games) behind. The Spaniard and the Brazilian played together for Real Madrid from 2005 to 2007. Part of the top 10 and with a chance of moving up is Raphaël Guerreiro from FC Bayern, who scored nine times in the Champions League for his former club BVB. The Portuguese, who is strong in attack, also played in midfield at times.

Lens’ Przemyslaw Frankowski also ensured that Sevilla did not make it into the Europa League with a penalty (63′) and ex-Mainz player Angelo Fulgini in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Franck Haise’s team will now move into the second round of the Europa League in third place. The RC no longer had a chance of reaching the round of 16 in the “premier class” because they lost the direct comparison against PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch, with 15 wins from 15 games in the Eredivisie, drew 1-1 at home with group winners FC Arsenal on Tuesday. Yorbe Vertessen equalized the Gunners’ lead through Eddie Nketiah (42′) in the 50th minute on an assist from Ricardo Pepi.
