The German basketball world champions missed a big surprise eleven days before the European Championship (live at RTL).
In the final of the Supercup in Munich, the team led by captain Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner the strong selection of Serbia 81:91 (32:38). The DBB team showed an appealing and committed performance for a long time, was already back with 15 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but fought again.
The duel with the team led by superstar Nikola Jokic, who is considered the best basketball player in the world, was the most important hardest test in front of the European Championship tournament, which begins for the DBB selection on August 27 with the group game against Montenegro in Finnish Tampere.
The German team and Serbia are considered top favorites for EM gold-the game was accordingly competitive, both teams wanted to set signs.
Wagner only gets on the other half in second half
“Today we played much better than against Turkey. We more and more played the style we want to play,” said Maodo Lo at “Magenta Sport”: “It was good against one of the best teams in Europe.”
Despite the defeat: the game showed for a long time what the DBB selection against a strong opponent is capable of. In contrast to the previous three games and three victories in the preparation, the team of national coach Álex Mumbrú was in the game this time. The World Cup second and Olympic third Serbia proved to be a clever, somewhat more accurate and, above all, better recorded.
For the German team, it was the first defeat in preparation after two wins against Slovenia and against Turkey in the semi -finals of the Supercup.
The best shooters from an enthusiastic audience in the sold -out SAP Garden were Wagner (26) this time, who only got going from the third quarter, and Tristan da Silva (14). Nikola Jovic from Miami Heat (22) collected the most points in the Serbs.
Spain hardy tests are on
From the beginning, the final was characterized by high commitment on both sides, the 11,500 spectators, among them numerous loud Serbian supporters, saw a sometimes heated game in which the German team left back from the start. But she kept fighting, thanks to an aggressive defensive and the accuracy of Tristan da Silva, who all converted his first five litters.
Born in Munich, Wagner’s teammate at the Orlando Magic, for the first time, for the first time, a German leadership ensured a German leadership, which did not stick to the first time – also because this time there was no reliability of Schröder and Wagner’s accuracy: Together, only three of their 13 attempted throwing succeeded until half -time.
After the break, Wagner got going, but the clarified Serbs increasingly pulled away from the middle of the third quarter. In the final section, the DBB selection made it exciting again, at least in the meantime.
Before departure to Finland, the German team remained two high -end tests against European champions Spain in Madrid (August 21) and in Cologne (August 23).
