Senegal has won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time. After losing two finals in 2002 and 2019, the team around top star Sadio Mané defeated record winners Egypt (seven titles) 4-2 on penalties, although Bouna Sarr from German record champions Bayern Munich failed from the point.

Mané from Liverpool converted the decisive penalty. No goals were scored in regular time and extra time. Egypt and superstar Mohamed Salah have to wait for their first triumph since 2010.

Mané became a hero in the end, despite being denied a penalty by strong Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski in the seventh minute, watched by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Overall it was a tough final. Egypt struggled after three overtime games in previous games. The Sénégal was game-determining, but failed again and again to Gabaski.

Hosts Cameroon secured third place on Saturday after beating Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties. In regular time, Cameroon had turned a 0:3 deficit into a 3:3 (0:2).
