Senegal reaches quarterfinals of Africa Cup of Nations

Yaoundé (AP) – The Senegal national football team has reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup. Thanks to goals from Liverpool star Sadio Mané (63rd) and Bamba Dieng (90th + 2), the favorites won 2-0 (0-0) against Cape Verde, who lost two players through red cards.

With a minute’s silence, the players had remembered the dead of the previous day before the kick-off. When hosts Cameroon reached the quarter-finals on Monday evening, a mass panic killed eight people and injured 38 others. The panic before the game against Comoros in the Stade d’Olembé in the capital Yaoundé is said to have been triggered because many people did not come to the stadium.
