Senate on refugees: Berlin as active as other countries put together

Every evening around 1,000 newly arrived refugees from the Ukraine have to be cared for and housed in Berlin.

This weekend alone there were around 4,000 people, said Berlin’s governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) on Sunday in front of a new emergency shelter in the former Tegel Airport.

All other federal states have reported between 600 and 1300 free places per day in the past few days. Social Senator Katja Kipping therefore emphasized: “Berlin pulls together as much as all other federal states.”

In the old Tegel airport terminal, 500 beds have now been set up in separate areas for 10 people each. There are also shower containers. The workers’ Samaritans, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the Red Cross (DRK) were particularly involved.

This emergency shelter can be expanded to accommodate up to 3,000 beds, Giffey said. However, people should stay there for a maximum of three days and then be provided with regular accommodation.

There are already a further 1000 beds on the exhibition grounds.
