In total, the counters recorded 86 different species of shells and snails, including 8 non-native species. Shells such as American sword clam, slipper, Japanese oyster, Philippine carpet shell and American borer mussel have been present in the region for some time, but there were also newcomers. The American beach shell seems to be becoming a permanent fixture on our beaches. A specimen of the smooth-beaked clam, an American shell, was found in Belgium.
According to the year, the Great Shell Counting Day is in its tenth edition. The festive edition will take place on Saturday, March 20.
