Selina Freitag and Justin Lisso are among the German ski jumping hopes. Privately they are a couple, but professionally they have had very different experiences.
Twice World Cup gold with the team, two silver in the individual: Selina Freitag’s ski jumping career is already impressive at the age of 24. Together with Katharina Schmid, she is currently considered the best German ski jumping hope among women.
Ski jumping is in Freitag’s blood: her father Holger Freitag was a ski jumper in the GDR. Her brother Richard Freitag was one of the best ski jumpers in Germany for years; with the team he won the silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, won eight times in the World Cup and came second in the overall World Cup in the 2017/2018 season.
Since Richard Freitag’s retirement in 2022, Selina Freitag is the only active jumper in her family. Freitag is still waiting for her first World Cup victory, but has already accumulated several podium places in her career.
However, she receives support not only from her family, but also from her boyfriend. With Justin Lisso, Freitag has another ski jumper at her side as a partner. The two have been a couple for several years. Not much is known about their private life; they largely keep their relationship out of the public eye. There aren’t even any photos together on their Instagram profiles.
Lisso comes from Thuringia and was able to demonstrate his talent during his junior career. In the team with Constantin Schmid, Philipp Raimund and Cedrik Weidel the gold medal in the team. In the mixed team he followed up with the silver medal with Luisa Görlich, Gianina Ernst and Constantin Schmid.
However, Lisso also struggled with injuries early on. Back in 2019, he tore a syndesmotic ligament in his left ankle and had to sit out for months. The bad luck with injuries remained with him throughout the rest of his career. Because when Lisso had established himself in the World Cup team with eight appearances in the 2022/2023 season and was called back into the team for the 2023/2024 season, he tore his cruciate ligament in the summer of 2023 and missed the entire season.
But that’s not all: When he fought back from the injury in the summer of 2024 and was preparing for the coming season, he tore his cruciate ligament again on his second jump and missed the entire previous season. However, he remained combative and posted on Instagram shortly after the new injury: “Giving up is not an option! See you on the hill in 12 months.”
In August the time had finally come: Lisso returned to the ski jump once again. He wrote on Instagram: “Finally back on the hill! Thank you to all those who accompanied and supported me on my long way back to the hill.” Lisso is currently working on getting back in shape to take part in competitions. His famous girlfriend would certainly be happy about that too.
