SEEN? ‘The Traitors’: “Surprisingly exciting, but will the psychological game continue to fascinate?” † SEEN?

TVAnyone who thought that ‘De Verraders’ would be a bland decoction of the very strong ‘De Mol’ is wrong. The psychological VTM game, which was beautifully portrayed, showed itself surprisingly compelling in the first episode. “Astrid Coppens immediately turned out to be a great detective.”

“You can really trust lawyers, you know”, suggested Walter Damen firmly on Monday evening in ‘De Verraders’ – actually a TV version of the popular card game ‘De Weervolven van Wakkerdam’. Through lively discussions, a group of BVs has to find out who the three impostors in their midst are and the criminal lawyer tried in advance to convince the company of his integrity. Unfortunately, the plea fell on deaf ears. “Lawyers will run off with all your money, even before they have done anything,” said former cyclocross rider Niels Albert.

Wendy Van Wanten opted for a different tactic. She often caused confusion. “There are two of me, hey. Iris is also there,” chuckled the singer, who has been struggling with dissociative identity disorder for more than thirty years. However, Astrid Coppens immediately realized that the West Flemish cannot be trusted. “He can lie very well. She’s got a kid from you-know-what.”

Ward Lemmelijn’s buttocks

The reality star did not only seem to be aware of the biggest state secrets, in other areas she also turned out to be a great detective. “I knew you were a sportsman, I could see it in your buttocks”, she immediately unmasked Ward Lemmelijn as world indoor rowing champion. Bart Kaëll behaved like a frisky foal because the game took place in a château: “Luc and I always stay in a castle on holiday. I would like to live in one.”

Only towards the end – when the three traitors were effectively identified – the jolly scouting atmosphere gave way to seriousness. Thanks to the austere imagery, the overall picture also looked entertaining and surprisingly compelling. To provide extra cachet, presenter Staf Coppens had even transformed himself into a mysterious lord of the castle – thanks to a ruptured Achilles tendon and a stately walking stick.

The question remains whether the game will continue to fascinate, now that the viewer knows who the traitors are. The flashforwards full of tears and heated diatribes already look promising. Although the undersigned sees some other potential cliffhangers. Did Wendy secretly smuggle a lady named Iris in her suitcase? Will Bart Kaëll be his new crib ever want to leave? Who knows, it may even turn out that lawyers have a heart.
