Second defeat in a row: VfB Oldenburg narrowly loses at Erzgebirge Aue

The trend speaks against VfB Oldenburg: After two wins, the team under new coach Fuat Kilic suffered their second defeat in a row on Saturday with 0:1 (0:0) at Erzgebirge Aue. Worries about relegation are growing again.

Actually, only victories help the promoted team in the fight to stay up, especially since their competitor Bayreuth had won their home game against SV Meppen on Friday evening. But the defense of Lower Saxony just doesn’t manage to hold tight for more than 90 minutes. And so it was once again a penalty that hit VfB to the core.

The deficit to the saving bank has grown again to four points. And the rest of the program for the coming weeks has a lot to offer with games against the top teams from Wiesbaden, Freiburg, Mannheim and Dresden, all of whom are still fighting for promotion.

Luck in Oldenburg: There is no penalty whistle

After the kick-off, Oldenburg initially had to resist the pressure from Auer. But VfB initially appeared to have recovered well from the first defeat under coach Kilic last weekend (1:3 against Cologne). Lower Saxony also had their first chance in the twelfth minute, but Patrick Hasenhüttl headed wide of the goal. Max Wegner made it much better a little later, but goalkeeper Martin Männel was there when the visiting captain shot (15th).

On the other hand, Sebstian Mielitz did not have to intervene when Aue had the best chance and Omar Sijaric shot (30′). The offensive man of the Saxons went down shortly after a contact with Justin Plautz in the Oldenburg penalty area. However, referee Florian Exner allowed play to continue (37th).

Mielitz tries to save and causes the penalty

Robert Zietarski had a promising free-kick opportunity for the guests after the break. The Pole shot the ball over the wall but couldn’t get Männel into trouble with his attempt (50′).

Otherwise, the game didn’t have much to offer – and it wasn’t entirely clear whether Oldenburg would be content with one point. Kilic made two changes after a good hour, but VfB did little offensively until Wegner’s header landed right in Männel’s arms (72′).

The last time Oldenburg kept a clean sheet was in the first game of the year (1-0 in Zwickau). The defense is anything but stable under Kilic. And so Dimitrij Nazarov ran freely towards Mielitz in the 80th minute. The noble technician lobbed the ball past the struggling keeper and received a penalty after the following foul. The 32-year-old played himself and scored to make it 1-0.

Oldenburg didn’t give up, but they lacked penetrating power even in the final minutes. It only got really dangerous once more: Männel buried Jakob Bookjans’ shot in added time. And overall it was not enough from VfB to increase the chances of staying in the third division.
