With a show of force, Borussia Dortmund achieved its primary goal for the season early on. With a confident 4-0 home win against SC Freiburg on the fourth-to-last matchday, BVB completed qualification for the Champions League. BVB head coach Niko Kovac was pleased after the end of the game.
After the statement win against SC Freiburg, the Dortmund coach highlighted his team’s concentrated performance and said on the “DAZN” microphone: “Especially in the first half, we let the ball run very well. We managed to play over the lines. If you cross two lines, you have the opportunity to play five against four. We played that out very well. I really liked it today, I think the spectators did too.”
In addition to the sporting performance, the game also had a historical dimension even before kick-off: the encounter against Breisgauer was Dortmund’s 1000th Bundesliga home game.
A milestone anniversary that was celebrated worthily. Kovac smiled: “The boys told me again that today was the 1000th home game. We should win that. I think we won that impressively today.”
Kovac doesn’t want to give up the rest of the season
But the BVB head coach’s primary focus was on reaching the premier class early. “Today we secured the Champions League and that’s what I wanted with three match days to go,” said the 54-year-old, expressing his relief.
Despite having achieved their goal for the season, BVB doesn’t want to simply let the season run out. Kovac made it clear: “We are athletes and athletes always want to win. We can’t and don’t want to let go […] We are professionals and professionals have to work hard until the end of the season.”
