Searches for victims of fire in Cambodian hotel halted | Abroad

Four days after the devastating fire at a hotel-casino in northwestern Cambodia, emergency services have stopped their search for further victims. That has been reported by the media. 27 people died in the fire.

The fire broke out late Wednesday night at the 17-story Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino in Poipet, near the Thai border. Among the 27 dead are 17 Thai, but also Malaysians, Nepalese and Chinese, a spokesman for the Cambodian disaster agency told the Khmer Times. Many victims died of smoke inhalation or injuries from jumping from the burning building.

“We have not been able to identify seven bodies,” the spokesperson also said. More than 100 people were injured in the fire. It is now under investigation to see “who should be held accountable,” Banteay Meachy Province Governor Oum Reatrey said.

The building was decorated with numerous lights for the holidays and a short circuit may have occurred, the authorities previously reported. It took the fire brigade 39 hours to extinguish the fire. More than 1,200 members of the emergency services from Cambodia and Thailand attended the scene and several helicopters were also deployed.

About 400 people worked in the Grand Diamond City. The hotel is located 200 meters from the border post, on the busy road that connects the Thai capital Bangkok with Siem Reap, a tourist town known for the nearby Angkor temples. The hotel is popular with people from Thailand as gambling is prohibited in their country.
