Werder Bremen is looking for a coach after parting ways with Horst Steffen. Two previously considered candidates probably won’t, now there is a new lead.

At Werder Bremen there is a new turn in the search for a coach. Two names that were recently at the top of the list apparently no longer play a role.

The Danes Bo Svensson and Bo Henriksen are no longer considered top candidates for the Bundesliga club. As first reported by “Bild” and then “Deichstube”, the former Mainz and Union Berlin coach Svensson canceled the club. The 46-year-old therefore lacked the conviction for the task.

Henriksen is also unlikely to be the successor to Horst Steffen, who had to leave on Sunday. According to “Deichstube”, this became apparent on Monday evening. The 50-year-old is under contract with Mainz until 2027. Negotiations were therefore too difficult, wrote the “Bild”.

This should also annoy Werder sympathizer Toni Kroos. In his podcast “Einfach mal Luppen”, the 2014 world champion named Henriksen as his favorite. “He saved Mainz, even in a pretty hopeless situation, like Urs Fischer is doing again.” Henriksen worked well in Mainz and even led the club into the Conference League.

Instead, a former Bundesliga professional is now coming into focus. According to information from “Deichstube”, those responsible are dealing with Martín Demichelis, among others. The Argentine should play a role in the considerations, but the personality is not yet “really hot”.

The 45-year-old played for FC Bayern between 2003 and 2011. Demichelis most recently worked as a coach at River Plate in Buenos Aires and then at Mexican first division club CF Monterrey. He had previously looked after the FC Bayern youth team and the Munich second team.

The table 15th. The Bundesliga parted ways with Steffen on Sunday after ten games without a win. Fritz then emphasized in a media round that the new coach should not be an internal solution, but would come from outside.
