Bain has a career that you say ‘you’ to. At the age of 14 he makes his debut at the highest level in Scotland at Kelburne. He soon ends up in the Scottish national team, where he plays no fewer than 200 international matches.
But he spends most of his career in the Netherlands. For example, he plays at HDM from The Hague, the Amstelveen Hurley, AH & BC from Amsterdam, HGC from Wassenaar, back to Hurley and now at the Larense LMHC.
Scot waves off after champion match
But now the Scottish striker has decided to hang his hockey stick on the willows. “I stop for my children and my wife,” he says in front of the NH camera, visibly fighting the emotion. “I have played for 22 years and now it is ready. It’s time for a new challenge, because I checked everything in my career.”
Laren has meant a lot for the career of Bain. “They turned my world upside down and gave a second chance to get my career back.” For example, he had at Amsterdam after his heyday suffer from panic attacks, performance pressure and a lot of pain. But on Laren’s hockey field he found himself and his form again. “It’s my second home.”
The Heren 1 van Laren is in a shared first place with HC Tilburg and ZSV Schaerweijde. A victory is therefore necessary to win the championship (and therefore a return to the big league). There would be no better farewell gift for Bain.
Difficult start, but Laren runs out quickly
But Laren is difficult to start the game. In the 7th minute HGC makes the 0-1. But three minutes later, Laren comes alongside through a used penalty corner from Balder Reyenga: 1-1.
Laren takes the lead in the second quarter. It is top scorer Bain who makes it 2-1 and also 3-1. Followed by the 4-1 of Jordi Schramel.
But HGC does get opportunities and shoots in the 4-2.
In the last quarter of the game, Laren throws the game and the championship in the end. Thanks to an assist from Bain, Schramel scores his second of the game. The match ends in a convincing 5-2.
With that, Bain ends his last hockey season with no fewer than 19 goals and a shiny champion scale.
