The Scots had a dream start to the cracker, as Scott McTominay scored the opening goal with a bicycle kick within three minutes.

Hampden Park exploded, but became quiet when Rasmus Højlund was allowed to take a penalty after just under an hour. The Danish striker coolly put his team on level terms. Four minutes later the game took a new turn, when former Ajax player Ramus Kristensen received his second yellow card and the Danes had to continue with ten of them.

Lawrence Shankland scored the 2-1 from a corner fifteen minutes before the end and it seemed to be in the bag for the Scots. However, Manchester United striker Patrick Dorgu scored Denmark again in the final phase. Scotland hunted for the winning goal with all their might and got it through a brilliant shot from Tierney.

McLean’s 4-2 was a wonderful exclamation point on a wonderful evening for Scotland. Denmark has been sentenced to the play-offs.

Group H: Austria takes the necessary point

In Group H, leader Austria had to score a point in the home match against pursuer Bosnia and Herzegovina to achieve qualification. That worked, but it wasn’t easy. Only ten minutes before the end did Michael Gregoritsch cancel out Haris Tabakovic’s opening goal (which fell after ten minutes of play): 1-1.

Group B: Switzerland to the World Cup, Kosovo to the play-offs

Switzerland qualified for the World Cup as winners of Group B. National coach Murat Yakin’s team had to settle for a draw in and against Kosovo. The score was 1-1 in Pristina. Ruben Vargas gave the Swiss the lead just after halftime. Florent Muslija equalized in the 74th minute for Kosovo, which finished second in the group and will advance to the play-offs.
