In Italy the motorized two-wheeler market opens 2026 with a positive signal. The decline in scooters was slight but insignificant, while sales of motorbikes and, surprisingly, mopeds increased

February 3 – 7.17pm – MILAN

The Italian motorized two-wheeler market greets the new year with an injection of confidence, recording a first positive sign. The month of January closes with an overall growth of 6.5% compared to the same period of 2025 as shown by the data released by Confindustria Ancma. A symbolic result which, according to the National Cycle and Motorcycle Accessories Association, must be interpreted in light of the structural characteristics of the month. January, with one less working day and an impact on the annual trend of around 5%, traditionally confirms itself as a period of transition, awaiting the arrival of more consolidated indications. 2026 inherits from 2025 a rather complex context linked to the strong growth in scooter sales, the worrying slowdown of motorcycles and the “almost” disappearance of mopeds, without forgetting the effects resulting from the entry into force in January 2025 of the Euro 5+ standard which have affected purchasing dynamics and registrations.

Motorcycle market: the first month of the year

The first month of the new year marks a growth of 6.5% in the motorized two-wheeler market, which corresponds to 19,282 registered vehicles. Surprisingly motorcycle recorded a double-digit increase: 16.26% and 8,099 vehicles put on the road. Slight decline for the scooterthe absolute protagonists of the market lost 1.47 percentage points with 10,400 units registered. Finally, they seem to recover a third of their market i mopeds with an unexpected growth of 33.85% and 783 registrations.

Electricity market and quadricycles

The zero-emission market saw an increase of 18.44% with 334 vehicles sold. The decline in mopeds, -21.5% and just 84 units, is offset by registered scooters which recorded a +15.43% and 187 units. The first part of the year was negative for quadricycles: -19.82% and 1,173 registered vehicles. The performance of the thermal and electric markets is discrepant: zero-emission vehicles show a decline of 49.49% with 642 units, while vehicles with traditional engines go from 192 vehicles registered in 2025 to 531 in 2026 (+176.56%).
