Mick Schumacher’s change is perfect

Since leaving Formula 1, Mick Schumacher has remained loyal to motorsport. This also applies to the coming year.
Mick Schumacher is breaking new ground – and will be competing in the US IndyCar racing series in the future. The 26-year-old joins the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) team. There he forms the driver trio together with Graham Rahal and Louis Foster. The team announced this on Monday.
Just a few days earlier, Schumacher had announced his departure from Alpine and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Now the next career step follows. “I am relieved to announce the news,” said Schumacher. He wants to bring his experience from Formula 1, WEC and other racing series to the new challenge: “I have insights and knowledge that will certainly contribute to a successful partnership.”
The former Formula 1 driver had already completed a test in the IndyCar beforehand – with convincing performances. “RLL has already prepared me excellently during the test phase and I am convinced that we can achieve a lot together,” said Schumacher. Because six of the 17 races of the season take place on oval tracks, an additional test on such a track is planned.
From 2021 to 2022, Schumacher was a regular driver at Haas in Formula 1, then a reserve driver at Mercedes. Most recently he drove in the World Endurance Championship. There was no return to the premier class – there were signs of a move to the IndyCar Series.
“I was immediately excited by the car and the American style of motorsport, which is characterized by its pure and direct racing, and that’s exactly what I’m really looking forward to,” said Schumacher. “Of course I’m curious about new experiences and always interested in broadening my horizons. This is the beginning of a new journey for me and I can’t wait for the season to get started.”
The new IndyCar season starts on March 1, 2026 in St. Petersburg (Florida). New to the calendar are the routes in Arlington and Markham, Canada. The prestigious Indianapolis 500 takes place on May 24th.
