With Lukas Ullrich and Joe Scally, Borussia Mönchengladbach only has two nominal full-backs in the squad, which is why this position is receiving particular attention when planning for the coming season. As the pay TV channel “Sky” reports, the Foals are interested in David Herold from Karlsruher SC, who could leave the club for an exit clause.

Update April 4th, 7:44 p.m.: Gladbach’s sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed in the run-up to the game against Heidenheim that the club was keeping an eye on Herold. “The interest in the player is definitely there,” he said on “Sky”.
Herold has developed into a top performer and long-running favorite at KSC this season. The 23-year-old left-back was missing for the first time at the weekend due to a yellow card suspension, but otherwise only missed eight minutes this season. The strong offensive left-footer managed five assists in 26 second division games. He increased his market value from 1.5 million to 3.5 million euros – making him the most valuable player in the KSC squad after teenagers Louey Ben Farhat (19, 7.5 million) and Rafael Pinto Pedrosa (18, 5 million).
Herold’s contract, which is valid until 2027, includes an exit clause that should range between 3.5 million and 4 million euros. In order to sign the former junior national player, Borussia would probably have to activate them. Then Herold would become one of the most expensive KSC departures in history. First place goes to goalkeeper Max Weiß, who moved to Burnley FC in the summer of 2025 for 4 million euros. He is followed by Philipp Max, for whom FC Augsburg paid 3.8 million euros in 2015.
After Luca Netz left the Foals for Nottingham Forest in the winter, only two full-backs remain in the Borussia squad: Ullrich and Scally. Most recently, coach Eugen Polanski, who has a three-man chain, trusted Jens Castrop on the left wing, who repaid this with good performances. Herold could also bring his offensive strengths there from the summer, but there is not yet an offer from Borussia.
