Schouten takes the first 3000 meters and seems ready for the World Cup

Irene Schouten is off the hateful zero in the 3000 meters in terms of victories this season. The skater from Hoogkarspel was the best at the World Cup in Quebec, Canada. Schouten was slightly faster than compatriot Joy Beune with 4.01.11.

The West Frisian quickly distanced herself from her opponent in her ride against Ivanie Blondin. However, she failed to beat Isabelle Weidemann’s track record (4:00.20). Schouten will participate in the mass start on Sunday evening.

“Finally again,” said Schouten after her first win in the 3000 meters in November 2022. “I had something every time, it drove me a little crazy myself.” Schouten stated that she was a bit uneasy after her late arrival from Salt Lake City. “I said to my coach, I’m just going to ride and see what comes out.”

According to the 31-year-old from North Holland, it was “a race full of mistakes” but that was not a problem. “In the end it’s all about the World Cup. I’m fit and I’m going to see how things go in Calgary. Fortunately, I still have two weeks. I hope to be at my very best there.”

Grevelt

There was also North Holland success for Isabel Grevelt in the 1000 meters. The skater from Petten came third behind the Japanese Miho Takagi and Femke Kok. In two weeks, the World Championship distances will be held in Calgary from February 15 to 18.
