Schoonoord shocked by explosion, bang heard miles away

Schoonoord was shocked by an explosion last night. Reports of a loud bang came in from a wide area around 2.10 am. The explosion occurred at a house on Brugstraat, where an elderly couple lives who, according to local residents, was not at home. The residents are very upset.

A loud bang can be heard in images circulating on social media. The explosion was also heard four kilometers away in Eeserveen. According to villagers, a package was left at a house, which then exploded. Other images show that the front door and a window have been blown out of the house.

“We first thought it was fireworks, one of those illegal bombs. We were very shocked,” said a local resident. “I heard that it was supposed to be an attack, but that it was carried out at the wrong address.” Other local residents also say they have no idea what the background to the explosion is.

The police do not want to talk about an attack at this stage of the investigation. “The cause of the explosion is still unclear. It was a loud bang, which was heard by many people in the area last night,” said a spokesperson. “That is very annoying, because it also affects your sense of safety.”

No one was injured in the explosion on Brugstraat. According to the spokesperson, the house suffered significant damage. “We are now investigating the explosive and conducting trace investigations.

The police assume that the person who planted the explosive then left in a car. “That could mean that several people were involved.”
