Scholz: Only a Russian defeat makes the world safe

Russian President Vladimir Putin will only give up his “imperialist ambitions” after a defeat in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned in his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. To make the world a safer place, Ukraine must therefore be helped with all might to repel the Russian attack. A peace dictated by Russia is unacceptable according to Scholz.

Scholz said Putin risks his war to destroy both Ukraine and Russia. According to the chancellor, he threatens to “catapult the world back” into a past where “war is a normal political tool” and where “the strong rule the weak”. He called on the UN to prevent that world from becoming a reality. According to the chancellor, the UN must also change itself and give a greater voice to poorer countries.

Scholz also announced that Germany will hold an international conference for the reconstruction of Ukraine on October 25 in Berlin. Germany will also assist Ukraine financially and materially in its reconstruction.
