Groningen Airport Eelde’s offer to take over up to twenty flights a day from Schiphol in the coming period was welcomed with open arms at the largest airport in the Netherlands.
“We are certainly happy with this. All help is welcome,” says a Schiphol Group spokesperson. During the May holiday it was chaos at Schiphol. Due to a combination of a large influx of travelers and a shortage of staff, travelers had to wait for hours and there were problems with baggage handling.
Schiphol has drawn up an action plan to prevent new problems this summer. On the one hand, the airport wants to recruit more staff, on the other it wants to reduce the number of flights. Like Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Eelde has offered to take over flights.
The question is whether the flights actually come to Eelde. Schiphol is in talks with airlines about this. “They have to agree to this, but those talks are still ongoing,” said the spokesperson.
At the end of April, Groningen Airport Eelde also offered to take over flights, but airlines did not move their flights then.
