Schalke wins six-goal spectacle at the leaders

After just eleven minutes Schalke were behind. But the team fought back – and celebrated several goals in Paderborn.
Ironically, the crisis club Schalke 04 has ended the winning streak of league leaders SC Paderborn in the 2nd Bundesliga. The deeply fallen traditional club surprisingly prevailed against the East Westphalia team with 4:2 (2:1) and inflicted another defeat on the leaders after five league games. Paderborn remains first despite their first home defeat, Schalke improved to 13th place with only their second win in their seventh game under coach Kees van Wonderen.
The top scorers Moussa Sylla (23rd minute), Kenan Karaman (43rd and 69th) and Janik Bachmann (88th) scored the goals for the “Royal Blues” second away win. Koen Kostons (11th) gave coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team the lead after a major Schalke defensive mistake, Felix Götze equalized after the break (52nd).
After just a few minutes, the guests showed why they have the second-worst defense in the league: After a simple, long pass from Götze, Kostons was completely free and had no trouble getting past keeper Justin Heekeren with Paderborn’s first shot on goal of the game. But this time the Gelsenkirchen team didn’t fall apart immediately, but responded relatively quickly: After a clever pass from Amin Younes, Mehmet Aydin passed it across to Sylla, who scored his eighth goal of the season in the follow-up.
The relegation candidate then took command; a long-range shot from Derry Murkin almost made it 2-1 thanks to the active help of former Schalke player Markus Schubert in the Paderborn goal (33′). Karaman then turned the game around before the break with a remarkable individual action – completely deserved, because at halftime the score was 14:2 from shots and 6:0 from corners.
But after the break, Schalke’s defense was asleep again: Götze headed in completely unchallenged. Karaman rewarded Schalke’s continued fight with his ninth goal of the season. Bachmann headed in shortly before the end to make the decision.
In the parallel game, SV Elversberg worked its way to a promotion place. Thanks to the deserved 2:1 (1:1) against 1. FC Nürnberg, the Saarland team climbed to second place behind SC Paderborn, at least temporarily. After Jens Castrop’s early goal (14th), Tom Zimmerschied (44th) and Muhammed Damar (53rd) scored the SVE’s third win in the last four games. The “Club”, on the other hand, remained winless for the fifth game in a row after a brief high with three wins.
The entertaining game in the arena at Kaiserlinde got off to a turbulent start. A header from Elversberg’s Lukas Pinckert was saved by the post for Nuremberg (2nd), on the other side goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof directed a lob from Mahir Emreli over the crossbar with a brilliant save (3rd).
After Castrop took the lead in the fast-paced opening phase thanks to an assist from young star Stefanos Tzimas, the “club” became too passive. The SVE therefore had more of the game. After a great chance from Fisnik Asllani (25th), Zimmerschied scored from a tight angle shortly before the break.
Elversberg carried the momentum into the second half and Damar’s opening goal was in sight. Only then did Nuremberg get back into the game better, and Tzimas missed the not undeserved equalizer for the guests, who were now becoming increasingly lively (72′).
