FC Schalke missed out on making it to the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table. SC Paderborn is still there – even though the East Westphalians themselves made a mistake.
The top teams in the 2nd Bundesliga are giving up. FC Schalke 04 didn’t get beyond a draw at Preußen Münster on Saturday afternoon. In the end the scoreboard read 0-0. Schalke played in the majority from the 56th minute onwards. Prussia goalkeeper Johannes Schenk was shown a red card after an emergency stop.
At the same time, SC Paderborn also made a mistake. The leaders lost their home game against Hannover 96 0:2 (0:2). Benjamin Källman scored both goals (20th and 36th minute) for Lower Saxony, who move up to third place in the table for the time being. Fortuna Düsseldorf also won in the last second against 1. FC Magdeburg. In the end it was 2:1 (1:0).
Schalke was initially unlucky: Mika Wallentowitz slightly hindered goalkeeper Schenk after a corner, who let the ball slip into the goal – but referee Florian Lechner ruled a foul (2nd). On the other side, the hosts’ goal by Oscar Vilhelmsson was canceled out due to an offside position (10th) according to video evidence. Otherwise, the direct Prussian attacks caused problems for Schalke, and Karius had to save several times.
After the break, Schenk rushed into Moussa Sylla and flew off the field. Morten Behrens took over Muenster the space between the posts and immediately parried a header from Kenan Karaman (75th). The guests dominated the action in the final phase, but largely lacked any brilliant ideas.
Paderborn, who hadn’t lost in the league since August, started the game well with the self-confidence of their successful series, but fell behind due to the guests’ first real chance: Källman was lucky twice after a long ball and scored from a tight angle. As a result, Hannover earned the lead, Källman followed up after some confusion in the penalty area, 96 could have even scored a third goal before the break.
Paderborn increased the pressure in the second half. However, Hannover continued to present themselves on an equal footing and maintained their lead confidently over time.
