Schalke: Reis wants reinforcements – insights into the ugly separation from VfL Bochum

No “Bigger Names”

The farewell to VfL Bochum last year had a bitter aftertaste for the new Schalke head coach Thomas Reis. “Unfortunately, the separation was very ugly,” said the coach of the Bundesliga bottom in a conversation with “Kicker”. He was “disappointed” with the public handling of the separation, but did not refer to the association, but to the individual people involved.

“I was certainly not to blame for how some things went, that’s very clear. In retrospect, however, I would have wished that one or the other had been straightened out elsewhere,” said Reis. That didn’t happen. “That disappointed me, so it took me a little bit to finish everything,” said the 49-year-old. “Although I clearly emphasize that this is about individual people, not about VfL as a club.”

Reis’ work in Bochum ended after three successful years in September 2022 and he had previously been said to have had contacts with FC Schalke 04. A month after his separation from VfL, he started his job as head coach in Gelsenkirchen. The big goal there is to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. “I want to stay up directly,” said Reis, adding: “We won’t be able to solve everything in a playful way, we have to step on our opponents’ toes in a figurative sense. If we can do that over 19 games, we have a good chance of staying in class.”

Schalke coach Reis on winter transfers: “My ideas are saved”

Reis also commented on possible further reinforcements in the winter. So far, the “squires” had signed Niklas Tauer, Jere Uronen (each on loan) and Timothée Kolodziejczak, who is to leave again in October (overview). “Bigger names will not be expected this time. Basically, well-known players do not guarantee success, even with them the question arises as to how quickly they can be integrated. And this rapid integration will be one of our main tasks for the newcomers this winter,” said the coach.

“In terms of sport, I have made my ideas, our management is trying under high pressure to implement things as best as possible, which is anything but easy in winter and with our financial means. I’m absolutely aware of the difficult framework conditions, and you won’t hear a single word of complaint from me. (…) It goes without saying that as a coach I would like to see one or two additional reinforcements in our situation,” Reis explained and described further reinforcements for the flanks as “desirable”.
