Schalke promises improvement in fan letter – mistake in squad composition

Writing from professionals & executive suites

The players, the board and the supervisory board of FC Schalke 04 wrote an open letter to the fans and members of the club and promised improvement. The Royal Blues, who were relegated again to the 2nd league in the summer of 2021, have so far not lived up to their role as favorites in the lower house and are instead in a relegation battle. After the 3:5 at Fortuna Düsseldorf, there are already nine defeats – before the 15th matchday. Only Braunschweig has one more. In addition, Schalke conceded the most goals alongside Osnabrück (33).

Even the new coach Karel Geraerts couldn’t stop the downward trend at the Revierklub. At the guest game in Düsseldorf it was 0:3 at halftime, after which the Ultras stopped supporting and left the stadium. “Dear Schalke players, after a sobering performance on Saturday evening, we would like to say a few words to you: We ourselves are very unhappy with the current situation,” says the letter from the Schalke professionals at the beginning.

“More than that: we are ashamed of some of the performances in the last few months! We have planned much more – every single one of us! Not living up to this claim (…) disappoints us greatly. After a game like we played on Saturday evening, we all feel disappointment, emptiness, anger and shame because we know that Schalke 04 is not worthy.” It is “not the time to sink into self-pity or self-doubt or to point the finger at others, but to get back up (…) and support each other,” the team’s letter explains. “It is our duty to repay the trust you have placed in us.”

Schalke bosses admit mistakes in squad composition

The special member letter from Monday continues, this time from the executive floor: “We know the seriousness of the situation. We are aware that the coming games are of fundamental importance.” For the next important game against bottom-placed VfL Osnabrück, the expectations of the team have been clearly communicated: “Full concentration, total passion and three points for the Royal Blues.”

The supervisory board and board of directors were self-critical after 13 points and 16th place so far. “Mistakes were made in the composition of the squad, some ideas didn’t work out – we bear responsibility for that. As club management, we will do everything we can to correct any undesirable developments during the winter break. We will also act decisively when looking at possible squad changes.” In terms of squad value, the “Knappen” are third in the lower house with 33.15 million euros.
