Interim coach Matthias Kreutzer is not an option for the job as FC Schalke 04’s trainer beyond Sunday’s game at Hertha BSC. “We know what we’re doing. We are definitely in the situation where we want to present the new coach next week,” said Schalke’s sporting director Rouven Schröder on Friday. Kreutzer also clearly stated: “I have no ambitions to take over this head coaching position.”
The 39-year-old previous assistant coach of the Bundesliga penultimate sits on the Schalke bench in Berlin on Sunday because the promoted team did not find a new coach in time after the split from Frank Kramer on Wednesday. Schröder did not want to say whether this had anything to do with possible transfer negotiations with a coach who was still under contract somewhere else. Regarding allegedly several cancellations that Schalke had already received, Schröder said dryly: “You can only get cancellations if you have asked someone.”
Tuchel, Magath & Co.: These German coaches are currently without a club
The 47-year-old also confirmed that the contract with Kramer had been terminated: “Frank Kramer will no longer be on the payroll.” Thus, “only” ex-coach Dimitrios Grammozis is currently on the Revierklub’s payroll. “It is clear that we are not on a bed of roses,” said Schröder about the financial situation. “But nobody has to believe that Schalke is not attractive.”
Schalke hopes Kreutzer will have a coaching effect against Hertha BSC
With Kreutzer as the current boss on the bench alone, Schalke, who have been pointless for four games, are hoping for “a certain effect” on Sunday. “A speech that every coach does differently can make a difference,” said Schröder, and attested to Kreutzer having a “special way of motivating”. The names Thomas Reis, Bruno Labbadia and Domenico Tedesco (each without a club) as well as Christian Ilzer (Sturm Graz) have recently been circulating as coach candidates – however, none of the four tracks seems hot.
