Schalke loan Wouters wants to leave Mechelen – move to Genk’s U23?

Only played five games

Midfielder Dries Wouters, who is still under contract with FC Schalke 04 until 2024, would like to end his loan to KV Mechelen early after just five games. This is reported by Belgian media and “Responsive sport“. However, a return to the Royal Blues should not be an option for the 26-year-old, nor for S04.

“Together with Dries and his advisor, we came to the conclusion that his chances of playing time in Mechelen are better than at Schalke. We are also convinced that he will receive the best possible support in Belgium for his further development,” ex-sports director Rouven Schröder justified the extension of the loan deal with Mechelen, which has been running since January 2022, by another year last summer. However, the Jupiler Pro League club did not exercise the purchase option for Mertens integrated in the deal.

Now, according to reports, Wouters is on the cards for a loan move to the reserve team at his youth club KRC Genk. However, the players’ union would have to agree to the transfer, since only one player in the team may be older than 23 years.
