Edin Dzeko (from left) is injured in the World Cup qualifier against Italy

As of: April 1, 2026 • 7:46 p.m

Bosnia’s national player Edin Dzeko suffered a shoulder injury during World Cup qualifying. FC Schalke 04 will initially have to do without the striker. Contrary to what was initially feared, an operation is probably not necessary.

At first it was just a fear among Schalke fans, but now it’s clear: Edin Dzeko is out for the time being due to a shoulder injury. The striker announced this at a press conference on Wednesday.

Contrary to what was initially feared, no operation is likely necessary. “I hope I’ll be back in a month,” said the Bosnia-Herzegovina captain. If he is out for a month, Dzeko would not only miss the upcoming second division game against Karlsruher SC next Sunday (1:30 p.m.), but would also miss the games in Elversberg (April 12th), against Münster (April 19th) and in Paderborn (April 26th).

Injury in international match

Dzeko had an unfortunate fall on his shoulder in a duel during the World Cup qualifier between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy on Tuesday evening. The 40-year-old watched the 4-1 victory on penalties and his first World Cup qualification since 2014 with a makeshift bandage made of tape on his arm. According to Bosnian media reports, he then had to go to the hospital before celebrating with an arm sling until late in the morning.

Best attacker

Despite Dzeko’s temporary absence, Schalke coach Miron Muslic expressed optimism after training on Wednesday. He is “very, very confident” that Dzeko will be back on the pitch in the next few weeks. With the 40-year-old, Schalke will initially be missing their best striker (6 goals, 3 assists) in a crucial phase of the promotion fight. Schalke is currently in first place in the 2nd Bundesliga.
