Joey Barton has made a name for himself in England – but also off the pitch. Now there is a new low point.
Next chapter about England’s scandal kicker Joey Barton. The former Manchester City and Newcastle United player faces a court in London. The British TV broadcaster BBC reports that he is said to have beaten his wife Georgia in June 2021. Barton is also said to have kicked his wife in the head. It is said that both were drunk.
The whole thing was preceded by a heated argument. The couple reportedly drank with two other couples while their children slept upstairs in the house. Barton is said to have threatened to fight his wife’s brother and father. The argument then escalated.
Barton has so far denied the assault charge. According to prosecutor Helena Duong, there was a verbal disagreement about a family matter. Joey Barton then “grabbed his wife, pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head.” The trial is still ongoing and it is unclear when a verdict will be reached.
Joey Barton is known for several scandals in England. Among other things, he is said to have pushed a cigar into the eye of a youth player at a Christmas party in 2007. He also placed more than 1,200 bets on football games between 2006 and 2016 and was banned for more than a year.
