SC Freiburg: Janik Haberer before moving to Union Berlin

2nd free transfer for Berlin

Coach Christian Streich confirmed last week that Janik Haberer is likely to leave SC Freiburg on a free transfer at the end of the season. Like the people from Breisgau, the 28-year-old’s new employer will play internationally next year. According to that “foosball” the midfielder is drawn to Union Berlin.

According to the report, the capital club prevailed against four clubs that will start in the Bundesliga next season. Both 1. FC Köln, Mainz 05 and promoted Schalke 04 were interested – there were even concrete talks with VfL Bochum. In the end, Haberer’s former club (played on loan at VfL in 2015/16) lost out because Haberer will start a new chapter with the “Iron”.

Union is thus continuing its own tactics on the transfer market of obliging established professionals at no cost. After eight free transfers in the 2021/22 season, Haberer is the second for the coming season after Fürth’s Paul Seguin (27) (of all transfers in recent years).
