At the traditional course in Imola, the drivers gained first experience. But the training ended prematurely.

Oscar Piatri starts with a exclamation mark in the European comeback of Formula 1. The McLaren driver from Australia took the top of the field at the first training session at the first training session and wants to get the fourth victory in series on Sunday (3:00 p.m./RTL and Sky).

Team colleague Lando Norris landed in second place behind him. Third came to Carlos Sainz, who drives in Williams this season.

For Red Bull, the start of the 400th race weekend in the team history was Holprig: Max Verstappen only took seventh place in the first training session. At Ferrari, the hoped -for home swing initially failed to materialize – Lewis Hamilton ran fifth, Charles Leclerc landed in twelfth place.

Mercedes newcomer Kimi Antonelli, who comes from Bologna, reached 13th place. Nico Hülkenberg, the only German pilot in the field, became tenth.

The training had to be interrupted with a red flag around two and a half minutes before the actual end, since Gabriel Bortoleto had an accident with his clean. When approaching to the penultimate curve of the course, Rivazza 2, the Brazilian had driven a little too far outside onto the curb, causing him to briefly control control. The car slipped through the gravel bed and hit the tire stacks head -on. Bortoleto was probably lucky and only damaged the front wing.

Since the time running down during a red flag is not stopped during the training sessions, the training session was ended by the accident. The route was no longer released in the remaining two minutes.

In the overall ranking, Piatri is in the lead after six season runs with 131 points. Norris follows with 115 points, defending champion Verstappen is currently third.
