England have convincingly qualified for the final of the European Championship women’s football. After a poor start, the team of national coach Sarina Wiegman won 4-0 against Sweden tonight.
Wiegman didn’t know what she saw for the first half hour. Her team was completely overrun by Sweden. With three chances in the first ten minutes and even a ball on the crossbar. But after half an hour of play, the host country bounced back. Driven by 28,624 fans in Sheffield, England finally got rid of their own half.
In the 34th minute, Beth Mead gave Wiegman’s team the lead. The star was also involved in the second and fourth English goal just after the break. She provided the assist to Lucy Bronze and prepared for Francesca Kirby’s 4-0. At the 2-0, Dutch VAR Pol van Boekel had to check whether Bronze was not offside, which turned out not to be the case. Just before time, Mead received a round of applause from Wiegman.
In the final, England will meet the winner of the match between Germany and France, which was too strong for the Lionesses in the quarter-finals after extra time. That semi-final is scheduled for tomorrow night in Milton Keynes. The final is in London on Sunday.
