Sánchez asks companies to “put their shoulders together” to promote a salary increase

  • President leave the equidistance which until now had maintained the socialist bloc and makes a direct appeal to the employers

With the debate on wage increases wide open, the Government has remained for weeks in a perfect balance, strictly at the same distance from the unions and employers, who have asked for responsibility to reach an agreement that helps alleviate the loss of purchasing power caused by high inflation. But this Tuesday night, in an interview on Canal 24 Horas of TVEthe chief executive, Pedro Sánchez, abandoned this calculated neutrality to claim directly to businessmen that “shoulder the shoulder“.

Until now, only Yolanda Díaz had come this far. The step taken by the president places the entire government with its sights set on the employers. Sánchez appealed to the social agents so that “the negotiation of many collective agreements“but headed”singularly” to the companies. “We ask the employers for a dose of responsibility,” he said.

He again points to the popular ones as the great champions of the energy companies: “They make a desperate defense of their particular interests”

The increase in wages as one of the key instruments to offset the high prices of energy and food is one of the big issues this fall. The unions have announced mobilizations, but for now the Government had limited itself to demanding that an agreement be reached with the businessmen. That some are moderate in their requests for salary increases and others give up part of their benefits, he defended.

This call means a new plot twist. Sánchez, with the tax on extraordinary profits of banks and energy companies, which It began to be processed this Tuesday in Congresshad placed himself in front of the big corporations, but had not put pressure on businessmen to raise wages, as he did tonight.

Ibex companies they do not hide their discomfort with the messages that the president launches in recent weeks against the powerful. Little does he seem to care about these criticisms. In the interview with the journalist Xabier Fortes he repeated them again because he understands that both sectors they are happily benefiting of this crisis. He even accused energetics of ‘doing’lobby‘ in Brussels” to prevent Spain and Portugal from capping the price of gas —the so-called Iberian exception—, something that, he said, the PP also did. Again he pointed to the popular ones as the great champions of energy companies: ” They make a desperate defense of their particular interests.”

“all variables”

The president spoke about another of the issues that have featured on the public agenda in the last week, the possibility of limit the price of some basic products, also launched by the second vice president. “There is debate because we are in a price crisis“. “The Government studies all the variables to defend the vast majority of this country.” “The power of money is great, but in a democracy there is no power greater than that of the majority,” he reiterated, referring to the resistance of large corporations. He argued that “you can’t find prices, but you can appeal to the responsibilityas does the vice president and the entire Executive”.

Regarding the limitation of prices in supermarkets, he admitted that they cannot “come up against”, but it is possible to “appeal to responsibility, as the vice president and the entire Executive do”

The Socialists do reject more flatly the proposal launched this Tuesday by United We Can to limit the rise in variable mortgages to the most vulnerable. Taking maximum care of his words and avoiding a head-on clash with his coalition partner, Sánchez recalled that the limits on mortgages “they’re not allowed” by the European Union, but he did say “share” the analysis of the purples and the UGT that it is necessary that the rise in interest rates, necessary to control inflation, “not be transferred” to mortgages. And that “explains”, he added, that the Government has proposed a levy on extraordinary taxes on banking and energy companies, because in addition the financial entities were “rescued for the taxpayer’s money.”

One of the political debates that have colonized the day has been the breach of the law by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), since this Tuesday the deadline set by the reform approved last June expired for the members to propose two magistrates for the Constitutional Court, added to the other two appointed by the Executive. Sánchez continued with the conciliatory line expressed hours before by the Minister of Justice: she appealed to the “responsibility” of the Judiciary (whose mandate expired almost four years ago) so that “sooner“Nominate two candidates for the TC. Moreover, he was sure that it will be so: he knows that there are negotiations between the two blocks and he has no doubt that “in a few days” the proposal will be ready.

No to political “offal”

But immediately the socialist leader Shooting to the PP. He stated his “disappointment“with the main opposition party, that of Pablo Casado and that of Alberto Núñez Feijóo. It is not a “personal disappointment, is from country“, he said. Because he lived through “very difficult moments” with Mariano Rajoy because he opposed the corruption of the PP but stood by his side to “defend territorial integrity when it was attacked”, in the fall of 2017, in the ‘procés ‘.

He expresses his “disappointment” not personal, but “of the country” with the PP, because he did help Rajoy with the ‘procés’ crisis, although he fought him for corruption

Sánchez assured that he shares the “indignation” of the president of the CGPJ and the Supreme Court, Carlos Lesmes, but he rejected that the responsibility lies with the Government and the PP, in equal parts, because the blockade responds exclusively, in his opinion, to a strategy of the conservatives, as evidenced by the fact that in the autumn of 2021 the two great forces came to an agreement “in 24 hours” to close the renewal of the Ombudsman, the Court of Accounts or the Constitutional Court. The reason that leads the PP not to “comply with the Constitution” is, for the Executive, clear: it wants a favorable TC for “try to repeal advances and social conquests” that the Courts have been approving in recent years and that the popular have appealed, such as the euthanasia law, the abortion law or the educational reform.

The other debate of the day revolved around the attendance of the emeritus king at the funeral of Elizabeth II in London, on September 19. The chief executive avoided commenting on whether he would have preferred Juan Carlos not to fly to the British capital: “In this matter, what I can say is that the Government of Spain is fully coordinated with the Royal House and that we take care of and worry in the best sense of the word of the delegation headed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia”. And when insisting if he would not have liked that the father of the current Monarch did not attend, he reiterated that this is an issue that “compete with King Juan Carlos”.

Regarding the possibility of a pardon for the former president of the Junta de Andalucía José Antonio Griñán, he reiterated that the Government “will respect the formalities, the procedures” and the decision will be “in accordance with the law and will be adopted with absolute transparency“. It did not get wet anymore.

The president showed during the interview on TVE the change in strategy that took place after the Andalusian elections last June: the search for greater empathy, the insistence that the Government will always defend the “middle and working class“, the effort of “pedagogy”, the underlining that the Executive is dealing with exceptional events —”except for one zombie invasion, this Government has had to face completely unprecedented situations”—, his conviction that not all the fish is sold ahead of the next elections. Sánchez emphasized that he takes the surveys “seriously” and analyzes them, and is working to “give the return”. “I understand the frustration, anguish and even the anger of the citizens. What corresponds to us is not to complain, it is to act.

Without explicitly acknowledging a shift in his strategy (talking about it is “political offal”, he dispatched), he remarked that he will show his face: “I have many defects, I have also made mistakes, I speak clearly, I do not hide“. And again he showed signs of resilience: “I know that the economic, political and media right wants us progressives to surrender, and we are not going to give up“In short, that he will not pave the way for Feijóo and that he will defend the square (Moncloa) until the end.
