During the night the meeting of the City Council ended: approved with 24 votes in favor and 20 against the sale of the stadium
San Siro is about to be sold to Inter and Milan, who in the coming months will be able to work on the construction of a new stadium in the area of current parking lots and the demolition of most of the Meazza. The city council of Milan decided late at night, after an infinite session, which began at 16.30 and ended at 3.50 in the morning. The vote was as expected very pulled: 24 votes in favor, 20 votes against. The sale is not yet accomplished but it will be soon, if there are no sensational surprises from banks in the next 40 days.
San Siro: what was voted – The city council yesterday was called to approve the Council resolution which provided for the sale to Milan and Inter of the San Siro stadium and surrounding areas. The price, defined on the basis of the evaluation of the area given by the Revenue Agency: 197 million, with a contribution-statement promised by the Municipality for 22 million. Along the afternoon the last positions in doubt have been defined.
The decisive moves – Monica Romano, councilor of the Democratic Party considered in the balance, made official his yes at the beginning of the day. Marco Fumagalli, group leader of the Sala List, always cataloged as the first of the undecided, instead made it known that he would not vote in favor of the sale. The turning point thus arrived when Forza Italia, at the beginning of the afternoon, announced that he would not vote against the sale resolution to the clubs, detaching himself from the vote of the center-right opposition. “The resolution presents many critical issues and numerous gaps but here we are talking about the redevelopment of an important area of the city and the possibility of allowing Milan and Inter to have a stage of ownership – said Alessandro Sorte, coordinator of Forza Italia in Lombardy -. We will not vote yes but not even against, because it would mean condemning Milan and the Milanese”. Abstention, therefore. A surprise because Forza Italia a few days ago had positioned themselves on a rather convinced no. Letizia Moratti, president of the National Consulta of Forza Italia and former mayor of Milan, expressed similar concepts, while Alessandro De Chirico, councilor of Forza Italia, went against the indications of his party, declaring himself “convincedly negative”. However, the exit from the classroom of the other Forzisti directors was decisive.
And now, what happens? – The sale to Inter and Milan must be perfected by 10 November, the date within which the deed will be reached. In short, the next 40 days will be used to have the green light of the banks and complete the practices for the transfer of ownership. From here on, we need to talk about club plans. Manica and “Foster + Partners”, the two architecture studios of world relevance chosen by Inter and Milan, in the next 12 months they should develop the project of the new stadium, on which there are ideas but not drawing. The works for the new stadium, to be built in the parking area of the current Meazza, would begin in the first half of 2027, with the inauguration of the new plant in 2031, after four years of work. The UEFA would thus have a new stage for the European 2032, to be added to the Juventus Stadium and other plants to be defined in 2026. The Meazza instead would remain standing for concerts and other activities and then, between 2031 and 2032, it would be dismantled, 90% demolished with the exception of the south-east corner, with a tower, part of the orange grandstand and the South Curve. Appeals – many appeals – which are already ready to shoot. This story will still be very long.
