Experience and talent also thanks to the arrivals of Esposito and Martinelli. The defense remains to be sorted out

What if horizons changed now? The scenarios have certainly changed, because the flash purchases at the start of the winter transfer window have given a new (better) imprint to Sampdoria’s future. An aggressive market, the Sampdoria sports CEO Fredberg had promised. And it was the beginning, indeed. Matteo Brunori, who arrived on loan from Palermo until June, will make his debut tomorrow in Avellino paired with Coda, who has been requested by other teams (Salernitana above all: his future is still to be decided) after a first half of the season as an absolute protagonist. He takes the place as Sampdoria’s top scorer of the season, in addition to the podium of the three top scorers in Serie B, at eight. The Slovenian Tjas Begic (loan with option that would extend his agreement until 2030) is an alternative for the offensive department, a modern left winger (but he has also played as a midfielder) capable of alternating with Cherubini. The keys to the midfield will immediately go to Salvatore Esposito, a former Spezia midfielder (next Friday he will already challenge his old teammates at Ferraris) who has joined the Dorians until 30 June 2030. A highly important addition that will raise the level of a midfield in search of a leader. The Greek giant Mitoglou remained in the pits and was put on standby after the first medical evaluations. The period necessary for him to recover his best condition after a long inactivity (he has been out of action for eight months) is too long, while Samp today needs ready players to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Already like this, however, the ambition to raise the bar and definitively leave the lower area of the rankings is legitimate, after a first round of constant chasing, with an irregular trend and a climate that was never serene.

Talent

But instead, Tommaso Martinelli, born in 2006, a talented goalkeeper from Fiorentina, also arrived – on a dry loan until June: he was growing behind De Gea, Viola sent him to Genoa with the clear objective (and evidently also the guarantee) of giving him more space than he could have today in Florence in an extremely complicated ranking situation. In Genoa, the Dorian side, the role of goalkeeper has been a thorn in the side since last year and this year the same problem has arisen again, even if Ghidotti has acquired confidence and reliability after a rotation between the posts. But Martinelli was not hired to sit idly by and will play for his place: then it will be up to Sampdoria to establish precise hierarchies.

Full stop

What is certain is that tomorrow another story begins. The owners, beyond the discontent, protests and poisonous climate that has been going on for months, have understood that another dramatic ending like the one last season cannot even be risked. Therefore, it immediately took action, still guaranteeing the necessary liquidity for a Sampdoria team that emerged from the black hole in which it had ended up practically since the beginning of the championship, also thanks to a summer purchasing campaign that was unhappy to say the least. For now he has said goodbye to Pedrola (who moved to Las Palmas), the eternal promise who never definitively exploded, the former Barcelona canterano with his silken muscles, for whom the Sampdorian environment was no longer ideal for trying to leave past fears behind him. Now Gregucci has to understand tomorrow which Samp will want to propose to Avellino: the 3-5-2 remains the most probable formation, but a hypothetical 3-4-1-2 is not excluded, given that a place will also need to be found in Pafundi. At the same time we are working on exits: Ferri, Ioannou, Riccio, Coubis, Narro, could say goodbye soon. New year, new Sampdoria. And it didn’t end here.
