Sam Mendes’ mammoth project: Pro Beatle a biopic, in cinemas in 2027

McCartney, Starr, the Harrison and Lennon estates and Apple Records are fully involved

Sam Mendes has something planned – his most ambitious project is coming up: The director wants to film the story of the Beatles and dedicate his own biopic to each of the Fab Four. The four stories about John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are interwoven. All four films are scheduled to be released in cinemas in 2027.

“I am honored to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time and look forward to challenging the notion of what constitutes a moviegoing experience,” Mendes said in a statement. His ambitious project is under special auspices: although this is far from the first film about the Beatles made since the Fab Four disbanded in 1970, it is the first to involve surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr , the estates of George Harrison and John Lennon and Apple Records are fully involved.

The production company is Sony Pictures. Producer Pippa Harris: “We intend to make this a uniquely exciting and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives, telling a single story about the most famous band of all time. It is a great privilege to have the blessing of the Beatles and Apple Corps to do this.”

It is still unclear when the 58-year-old British director Mendes will start filming. Likewise the cast or the question of which Beatle he starts with: John? Paul? George? Ringo? Or the other way around? What is certain is that Mendes is at least up to the technical challenge. He has already directed a very good Bond film (“Skyfall”) and a war film “1917,” which was apparently filmed as a one-take. He received the directing Oscar in 2000 for “American Beauty.”
