Sam Bennett won the Frankfurt cycle race on May 1st. The Irishman prevailed in the sprint of a larger peloton on Sunday ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Alexander Kristoff. Phil Bauhaus was fourth best German. Local hero John Degenkolb (22nd) had just as little chance of winning at the Alte Oper as last year’s winner Jasper Philipsen.
The race over 183.9 kilometers took place on the traditional date for the first time in three years. In 2021, the event was postponed to September due to the corona pandemic, and the year before it was canceled altogether.
Escape attempts are unsuccessful
The race was marked at the beginning by a breakaway group of five. Pierre Rolland, Jens Reynders, Johan Meens, Juan Antonio Lopez-Cozar and Daan Hoole all had a five-minute lead. But when the pace picked up in the Taunus, their adventure was over.
The defining figure in the middle part of the race was local hero Jonasrutsch. The Odenwald had announced an attack in advance and kept that promise. But his aggressive driving style was not crowned with success. Before the fourth crossing over the Mammolshainer Berg, the clearly shrunken main field was reunited. Then there were more attacks, but the sprinter teams had the race under control and the expected mass arrival took place.
