Mukansanga is from Rwanda, she has already directed the women’s World Cup: “But men’s football is another level. I saw my name, I was thinking of a mistake “

“I thought maybe they got my name wrong when I found it on the referees list.” Salma Rhadia Mukansanga was the first to be surprised by her appointment as referee of the Zimbabwe-Guinea match, the day before yesterday, 3rd round of Group B, of the African Cup. She thus became the first female referee to direct a match in the most important African national competition, the first in 65 years of the tournament. Mukansanga, 33, is Rwandan, from Rusizi, a western province, south of Lake Kiwu and about fifty kilometers from Burundi. A country with little football tradition, Rwanda, but dramatically known for the 1994 war between Hutu and Tutsi, a genocide of 800,000 victims and millions of displaced persons.
