Suddenly Champions League
German fourth division player facing an unexpected move

Mateo Biondić is currently playing for fourth division club Eintracht Trier. But now the striker is apparently moving away – to a club that plays in the premier class.
What sounds like a football fairy tale could now actually come true. Mateo Biondić will leave German fourth division club Eintracht Trier and move to a Champions League club. This is what transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports. The 22-year-old is therefore joining Union Saint-Gilloise.
The team from Belgium is currently in 27th place in the premier class table, but with two games left they definitely have a chance of progressing. Saint-Gilloise will play the final two games away at FC Bayern and at home against Italian club Atalanta Bergamo. Biondić could make his Champions League debut in his home country against Munich.
According to Romano, Trier and Saint-Gilloise have already agreed on the deal. The medical check should take place soon.
Biondić has scored seven goals in 17 games for Trier in the Regionalliga Südwest this season and provided five more. The attacker never played higher than the third division in his career. In the future, not only Champions League football awaits him, but possibly also the first title of his career. Saint-Gilloise is currently in first place in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
Biondić’s story is also somewhat reminiscent of Deniz Undav’s. The German international also moved from the third division to Saint-Gilloise in 2020. At that time the Belgians were still playing in the second division. With an extremely accurate Undav, the team was promoted to the first league as champions. In the following season, today’s Stuttgart player became top scorer with 25 goals.
