Sailor (22) is sentenced to six months in prison for desertion and forgery

Unlawful absence

Since October 2021, the man has been unlawfully absent several times. From eight days of absence, this is considered desertion. In wartime, a soldier is considered a deserter after three days of absence. The young Carolo came to register at the naval base at the end of July 2022. According to EH, a bad feeling was the reason for his absence and he substantiated this with forged medical certificates. The sailor in training admitted during his interrogation that he had paid 25 euros per false certificate.

Six months suspended prison sentence

During the trial on February 1, the twenty-something did not show up and prosecutor Frank Demeester therefore gave him a six-month effective prison sentence and a fine. The judge eventually sentenced the deserting sailor to six months in prison, taking into account the clean criminal record.
