‘Ruud van Nistelrooij succeeds Roger Schmidt as PSV head coach’

Ruud van Nistelrooij (45) will be the new PSV trainer. Fred Rutten becomes his assistant. Van Nistelrooij succeeds Roger Schmidt, he will leave after this season.

Several insiders have confirmed this to the Eindhovens Dagblad† Van Nistelrooij and Rutten have both agreed to PSV’s offer. According to the ED, the club will announce the appointment of the two soon.

Van Nistelrooij has never made it a secret that he wants to become PSV head coach. When Schmidt announced that he would not renew his contract, the Geffenaar was immediately considered the most important candidate. However, Van Nistelrooij then indicated that he was not ready for it yet.

That changed when Marcel Brands was appointed as successor to Toon Gerbrands. The new general manager, who will also start next season, has entered into talks with Van Nistelrooij. With Fred Rutten as an experienced assistant next to him, Van Nistelrooij dares to take the step. Rutten used to be PSV head coach himself. Van Nistelrooij is currently the head coach of Jong PSV.

Roger Schmidt, in turn, is well on his way to Benfica. The German coach leaves PSV after two seasons.
