Russian talk show guest has little compassion for earthquake victims: “I don’t see Syria and Turkey fighting on our side” | Abroad

Yesterday, Russian state television again heard some shocking statements. This time, during the talk show of the infamous host Vladimir Solovyov, on the state channel ‘Russia-1’, the guests talked about the misery in Turkey and Syria after yesterday’s devastating earthquake. “I don’t see any Syrian or Turkish units fighting on our side (…). I have to think about my country first”, one of the guests sneered.

“A lot of people have died today in Turkey and Syria,” said the talk show guest. “Russia has offered help and will provide it. Do I feel sorry for them?” said the Russian about the more than 5,000 deaths in both countries. “Yes, I feel sorry for them as human beings. But do I feel more pity for them than for my compatriots, or even Ukrainians, or Russians who die every day in the war? I will be honest. (….) I don’t see any Syrian or Turkish units fighting on our side. Of course we have to help, I suppose. But we are not the Red Cross. You can’t help everyone. I have to think about my country first”, it sounded loud.

Russian aid

The Kremlin announced yesterday that Russia would send aid to Syria and Turkey. As of today, more than 300 Russian soldiers stationed in Syria are said to be helping clear debris. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the military had immediately started the aid on Monday and that they have 60 vehicles at their disposal. They are “clearing debris, searching for victims and providing medical assistance in the areas most devastated.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin already expressed his support for the leaders of Turkey and Syria yesterday. Putin is said to have even spoken to his Syrian colleague and ally Bashar al-Assad. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also accepted Russian aid, the Kremlin previously reported.

The strong earthquake that hit Turkey and neighboring Syria yesterday had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. More than 5,000 deaths have already been counted in both countries combined. Countless people are still trapped under the rubble. The death toll is expected to continue to rise.
