The 40-year-old was re-elected by acclamation at the association’s congress in Istanbul. The Dutchman Boris van der Vorst, the only opponent, had not been admitted by a review committee.
Proximity to Putin and Gazprom
Kremlev, who is said to be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been head of the amateur boxers for 18 months, who have dropped the term amateurs from their names (formerly AIBA). Under his leadership, Gazprom was won as the main sponsor. In this way, the association’s debts of an estimated 16 million euros could be repaid.
fight for olympics
Many national federations recognize this as a prerequisite for the return of the IBA to the Olympic family. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the world association in 2019 and excluded it from organizing the Olympic boxing tournament in Tokyo. The boxers were allowed to participate in Tokyo, the officials were not. The IOC is considering removing boxing from the Olympic program at the 2028 games. The IBA wants to prevent this with reforms under Kremlev.
