Russian industry is facing serious problems due to possible sanctions

Russia could face serious problems in a number of industries if the United States imposes tough technology sanctions on our country, modeled on North Korea, Cuba or Iran.

Until the US administration made public sanctions that are going to be imposed on Russia in connection with the decision Vladimir Putin recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. However, they are expected to affect the supply of high-tech goods to our country.

About what exactly the restrictions can be and what consequences they can lead to in an interview RIA News Ivan Pokrovsky, director of the Association of Suppliers of Electronic Components, said.

In his opinion, the worst-case scenario would be the introduction of tough sanctions, similar to those already in force against Cuba, Syria, Iran and North Korea, as well as Crimea. At the same time, Pokrovsky noted, formally almost nothing will change for the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, and mainly manufacturers of civilian products will suffer. They will not be able to import the necessary components without obtaining a special export license from the United States.

Now foreign companies can supply to Russia, without obtaining a special permit, any components of general use that are not classified by ECCN codes (that is, according to Washington, they can be used for military purposes).

Pokrovsky believes that in the event of tough sanctions, suppliers, with all their desire, will not be able to obtain licenses from regulators to sell electronic components to all Russian customers. The expert does not rule out that large companies will independently completely refuse supplies to Russia – after all, for most of them, the Russian market is a fraction of a percent of the world market.

As a result, Russian enterprises that produce mass-produced mass products, not only electronics, but also cars, electrical engineering and industrial equipment, may suffer the most from the introduction of such sanctions. Problems should also be expected in the IT industry, due to the limitation of the supply of software and the provision of technical support.
