Russia moves to war economy

After 4.5 months of war, Russia wants to better align its economy with the needs of the army. Parliament has approved a government proposal that would oblige companies to supply products to the armed forces. Employees may be forced to work nights, weekends and holidays and forego their leave. The law changes are necessary because of Western sanctions and arms supplies to Ukraine, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said.

Moscow has emphasized since the start of the war on February 24 that everything is going according to plan in the “special military operation” in the neighboring country. However, critics and foreign military experts point out that Russia may have lost significantly more soldiers and equipment in recent months than is officially recognized. Critical Russian media also place the bill in this light.
