Russia has fined Google nearly 367 million euros (21.1 billion rubles) for not removing videos from YouTube that violate the country’s laws, Reuters news.

According to the Russian telecommunications authority, Roskomnadzor, the videos have been related to “fake videos” about the war in Ukraine. In the official announcement, the content refers to, among other things, spreading false information about a “military operation”, extremism and terrorism, and material that promotes a careless attitude towards the lives and health of minors.

Roskomnadzor threatened Google will take action in March if this does not remove “illegal” videos from YouTube. At the time, the amount of the fine was said to be eight million roubles. However, the amount of the fine was now announced as 21.1 billion rubles, which is practically Google’s annual turnover in Russia.

Google announced in June that it will file for bankruptcy of its Russian subsidiary. Google has said that the authorities have seized the bank account of its Russian office in the country, which has made it impossible to pay salaries to the staff.
